In honor of National Human Rights Month, we’ll read this inspiring children’s book that tells the story of Wangari Maathai, a Kenyan environmentalist and Nobel Peace Prize winner who was repeatedly banned and jailed in her home country for her activism. Returning to Kenya to find forests destroyed and communities suffering, Wangari took action by planting nine trees in her backyard, sparking a grassroots movement that ultimately transformed landscaped and lives. This powerful story shows how one person’s dedication to environmental and human rights can inspire lasting change.
