Happy 10th Birthday, JCC Water Park!
July 19, 2017
Jess Lanke, JCC Director of Recreation & Aquatics, accepted a leadership role in Aquatics right before the start of last summer. That was not, however, her first year working at the Hy & Richard Smith JCC Water Park in Mequon. She actually worked as a lifeguard during the inaugural summer at the Water Park ten years ago. On June 9, she and her team opened the Water Park for its 11th season which gave her an opportunity to reflect on what it was like to be a part of the fun 10 years ago.
“I remember walking into the Park for the first night of training and seeing it for the first time. Everyone was so excited about the climbing wall! That first night the Water Park staff got to spend a few hours on the wall, lily pads, and on the play structure trying everything out. I may or may not have been the first person up that climbing wall! I also remember the group of lifeguards that worked that summer and how everyone was like a Water Park family. I loved when Gesher Camp came out to swim on Fridays before the park opened. The kids loved it, and they still do that today.”
After being away for a while, Jess was excited to see all of the updates that have occurred over the course of the past decade. The Activity Island space has blossomed to offer members as much fun on land as on water with a GaGa Pit, basketball courts, sand volleyball, tetherball, Frisbee golf net, and grassy space for play. Look for a bigger and better GaGa Pit to be installed for this season!
In addition to our annual JCC Membership Corn Roast in August, Jess and her team have a lot of fun planned for the 87 days of summer that we are allotted here in Wisconsin.
Last year, Twilight Swim was a big hit with individuals and families who can’t always get to the Water Park during the day, so they are returning. On Tuesday, July 11, and Wednesday, August 16, you can enjoy the Water Park from 6:30-8:30pm and the Snack Shack will stay open for dinner until 8:00pm on those nights.
Teen Night is new this year! Teenagers (13-17 years old) get two special nights to hang out at the Water Park after hours with their friends without all of the little kids and adults around. On Wednesday, July 19, and Thursday, August 10, from 6:30-8:30pm the pool will be open and there will be games happening on Activity Island. #TEENNIGHT #JCCWATERPARK #BETHERE
The JCC Triggerfish Swim Team has grown during the indoor season, and is ready to move out to the Water Park for the summer. Practices will be held from 6:30-7:30pm Tuesdays and Thursdays. This will give the team a chance to really spread out over the entire six lane pool and get an opportunity to use diving blocks.
At the end of the season, the Water Park will be hosting the very first Dog Swim! Labor Day is the last day for people to swim at the Water Park, but on Wednesday, September 6, from 5:00-7:00pm your dog will finally get to enjoy a member benefit! For $5, your fury friend can swim around the pool before it is drained for the season.
