A Kind of World to Come

February 6, 2015

Every week, Jody Hirsh, the JCC's Judaic Education Director, provides a Judaic message that is featured at the top of the JCC's weekly email newsletter. Below is the Shabbat message for Friday, February 6, 2015.

A Kind of World to Come

One of the traditional idioms expressing the uniqueness of the Shabbat tells us that the Sabbath is  -- “A Kind of World to Come.” The World to Come is the Jewish version of Heaven: A world of peace and tranquility... a perfect world ushered in by the Messiah! Since the Messiah hasn’t come yet, we have a taste of those Messianic days one a week... on the Shabbat! We have our own taste of the World to Come at the Jewish Community Pantry on the West Side. Since 1976, the Pantry has been serving the disadvantaged – providing food in the last six month for more than 16,000 people in need, 40% of whom are children. Last Saturday night was our annual “Laugh it Up Milwaukee.” A comedy program starring the fabulous Howie Mandel. This was our annual fundraiser . . . this year in support of the Hunger Task Force. It was a huge success – benefitting our Jewish Community Pantry, and other pantries throughout Milwaukee. Our commitment to relieving hunger through our ongoing activities in the Jewish Community Pantry, and the Jewish Community Garden, and this year’s Laugh it Up Milwaukee is a true example of the Jewish mission of “Repairing the World” – making the world a better place through concern for everyone, Jew and non-Jew alike.
