Food - Medicine for Your Body

January 6, 2014

By Elaine Harvey – MS, CN, JCC Nutritionist

A healthy immune system is the cornerstone of good health:  you can be exposed to germs and not get infections; you can come in contact with allergens and not have allergic reactions; you can even be exposed to carcinogens and not get cancer.

The food you eat can affect immune function in a favorable or unfavorable way: for example, the anthocyanins in berries may play a significant role in preventing lifestyle related diseases such as cancer, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease; but if you consume these berries in the form of blueberry pie, or strawberry jam, the presence of high sugar concentrations will rapidly destroy these immune boosting anthocyanins.

If you have been eating foods just to lose weight, or gain weight, or just because it’s ‘there’, you have been depriving yourself of a very important truth: the food you eat is medicine for your body.  If you want to stay well and live a life filled with energy and vitality, you need to inform yourself about the natural healing agents, mood enhancers, and energy boosters that are an integral part of the food/wellness connection.

Join me on Tuesday, February 4th at 6:00 PM at the JCC for a FREE “Eating to Boost your Immune System” workshop as part of the Stillwaters Coping Together Program. In this workshop we will explore how the foods we eat can affect our immune function, and how we can learn to appreciate the foods that can make us well and keep us well.
